The previous year, RaceTrac had launched its new Rewards app, but the approach was design-led rather than user-focused. Users were frustrated with not being able to find anything and uninstalling the app as a result.

I was approached by RaceTrac to lead the design of the new experience with the caveat that the same platform and third-party integration were required. The internal product team and I began by analyzing the current experience and determined that it was best to start from scratch. From this point, I began by creating an app map based off the business requirements document.

After creating user flows and wireframes, I built a prototype of the app to do moderated user testing. We needed to make sure that we had nailed the experience before any development started. One we felt good about the performance and feedback from the users we moved into the visual design stage. I approached this with a fresh, clean and playful personality, one that would influence other digital products down the road. Over the years, we have continued to iterate and add new functionality to the application to make it what it is today.
